OKLAHOMA CITY - May 13, 2004 - Oklahoma's Office of Homeland Security recently launched an enhanced Web site with several new interactive services that facilitate communication between the eight Oklahoma regional councils, its members, and training officers. The site was built by and is available through the state's official Web portal at www.yourOklahoma.com.
The Web site allows the public to see who is working on homeland security initiatives in their area while providing a secure electronic avenue for authorized users to communicate with officials and other select representatives. After successful login, authorized users can post messages and documents to regional bulletin boards. The training events calendar is accessible to the public and published on the Office of Homeland Security Web site.
"The new Web site is an excellent way for our office to communicate with the public and with responders, each of whom is essential to homeland security efforts," said Major Kerry Pettingill, Director of the Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security. "The site is well designed, user-friendly and provides valuable, easy-to-find information."
The original Web site, which was highlighted in The New York Times, was the first government service to offer a threat level notification system that allowed subscribers to receive text or e-mail messages for threat level updates. Messages are currently sent to the computers, digital assistants, and cellular phones of more than 4,700 subscribers.
"This new site reinforces the basic philosophy of effective Web development, which is evolution," said Lisa Counts, general manager of YourOklahoma. "The original site we developed for the Office of Homeland Security in December 2001 was perfect at the time because it offered a means for the state to release information to the media, public, and its various audiences. This new site capitalizes on those achievements and offers a far greater scope of service to encompass many of the new responsibilities of the Office of Homeland Security."
