NASHVILLE, Tenn – July 14, 2004 – Tennessee's online sales and use tax filing service has proven to be a simple solution for the state's taxpayers. Since launching on July 1, 2003, nearly $534 million in sales and use taxes have been remitted through the state's e-filing option, which is available through the state's official Web site at www.Tennessee.gov.
"One of the Department of Revenue's top priorities is electronic tax administration," said Commissioner Loren L. Chumley. "This e-filing option is just one component of our ever-expanding suite of electronic tax filing options that offers cost-savings to the state and convenience and peace of mind to our customers."
For first-time users, an online demonstration of the service is available at www.tennesseeanytime.org/sales/demo.
Tennessee.gov currently offers online filing for individual income tax, professional privilege tax, sales and use tax, consumer use tax, and franchise and excise tax minimum payments. Many business tax registration activities also can be done online, including making address changes and opening or closing sales tax accounts. Information about motor fuel tax electronic data interchange and sales and use tax certified software providers is available through Tennessee.gov.
The Department of Revenue also offers computer access to customers without computers. Computer access is available in the department's offices in Chattanooga, Jackson, Johnson City, Knoxville, Memphis, and Nashville. Interested tax filers must be registered and have an account with the Department of Revenue. Customers may register when they come to the department. Those interested should prepare their data beforehand and bring their tax information with them.
All taxpayer data, whether paper or electronic, filed with the Department of Revenue is confidential data protected under Tennessee law.
The Department of Revenue collects approximately 92 percent of Tennessee's total state tax revenue. During the 2002-2003 fiscal year, the department collected $8.4 billion in state taxes and fees. In addition to collecting state taxes, $1.5 billion of local sales tax was collected by the department for local governments during the 2002-2003 fiscal year. Tennessee's online sales and use tax filing system was developed by Tennessee Information Division, which manages Tennessee.gov's online services on behalf of the state.
