INDIANAPOLIS – November 1, 2004 – Indiana's official Web portal has been ranked among the best government Web sites for the third consecutive year. accessIndiana (www.IN.gov) placed second among a field of more than 300 public sector Web sites in the 2004 Best of the Web national competition for eGovernment excellence.
The 2004 Best of the Web competition was conducted by the Center for Digital Government, an international research and advisory institute on the use of information technology in government. Now in its ninth year, Best of the Web evaluates government Web sites based on their innovation, Web-based delivery of public services, efficiency, economy, and functionality. accessIndiana placed third among all state Web sites in the 2003 competition and ranked fourth in 2002.
"Hoosiers now can access information and conduct business with the state when they want, all online," said Governor Joe Kernan. "From renewing driver licenses and filling out permits to applying for professional licenses and reserving campsites, it's all right at their fingertips."
Launched in December 1995, accessIndiana supports nearly 30 million visitor accesses per month and processed approximately four million transactions in 2003. To maximize taxpayer return on investment, Indiana uses a self-funded solution to provide eGovernment services at no upfront cost to taxpayers. The state's official Web site is managed by Indiana Interactive, an Indianapolis-based subsidiary of eGovernment firm NIC (Nasdaq: EGOV).
"I really want to congratulate the team in Indiana," said Cathilea Robinett, Executive Director of the Center of Digital Government. "This site is absolutely amazing. It has hundreds of online applications, innovative features, and an emphasis on cross-government collaboration. This is definitely one of the best sites in the country."
accessIndiana offers more than 200 interactive government services, including professional and sportsman licensing, vehicle and driver's license renewals, and tax and permit filings.
"The Best of the Web award is a real testament to Indiana's success in providing better service to its citizens through the use of innovative technology," said Laura Larimer, Indiana's Chief Information Officer.
Representatives from the Center for Digital Government and officials from the 2003 Best of the Web-winning state and local governments in Utah, Washington, D.C., and Montgomery County, Maryland, served as judges for the 2004 Best of the Web contest.
