RICHMOND, Va. – March 30, 2006 – The Commonwealth of Virginia has extended the contract for Virginia Interactive, Inc., to manage its official government Web portal (www.Virginia.gov) for another five years. Virginia Interactive is a wholly owned subsidiary of eGovernment firm NIC (Nasdaq: EGOV) and signed its original contract with Virginia in September 1997.
The five-year contract extension was approved by Virginia Chief Information Officer Lem Stewart and went into effect on March 17, 2006. The agreement runs through August 31, 2012.
Since its launch in March 1998, Virginia.gov has been recognized consistently as one of the nation's most progressive eGovernment portals. Working in partnership with Virginia Interactive and NIC, the Commonwealth has introduced many government technology firsts, including interactive online customer service, Web site personalization, personal digital assistant-accessible applications, and the ability to track elections on a real-time basis through Virginia.gov.
Virginia.gov has launched more than 100 online government services during the last eight years, including hunting and fishing licenses, legal plan sellers' registration, unemployment claims, and voter registration verification. In 2005, the portal supported over 5 million unique visitors per month on average and processed more than 30 million transactions
The Commonwealth's official Web site is also among the most honored eGovernment sites. Virginia.gov was ranked best in the nation in the Center for Digital Government's Best of the Web competition in 2002 and has been a top five finalist for five of the last six years.
“We value our relationship with the Commonwealth of Virginia and thank our partners for this vote of confidence,” said Harry Herington, NIC's Chief Operating Officer. “We look forward to further expansion of our successful eGovernment partnership during the next five years.”
