PROVIDENCE, R.I. – September 4, 2007 – The state of Rhode Island last month signed a new, long-term contract with eGovernment firm NIC (Nasdaq: EGOV) to manage its official government Web site, RI.gov (http://www.ri.gov). The contract includes an initial three-year term with one two-year renewal option that can extend the contract through 2012.
“We’ve worked with NIC for six years, and the results speak for themselves,” said John E. Landers, chief information officer for the state of Rhode Island. “In that time, we’ve made doing business with the state of Rhode Island easier. We’ve put 170 state services online, including business-tax processing for 55 unique taxes. We’re happy to continue the partnership.”
The state signed its original multi-year contract with NIC in 2001. After fulfilling the five-year contract and an extension, NIC’s initial contract with Rhode Island ended on Aug. 7. The state issued a competitive bid for eGovernment portal services earlier this year, and awarded the contract to NIC again after a competitive review. The state will continue to use a self-funded model that supports the Web site and development of new applications through transaction fees charged for a limited number of online services. NIC builds and maintains the site at no upfront cost to taxpayers.
“We’re proud of our work for Rhode Island and appreciate the confidence the state showed by picking us again as its partner,” said Harry Herington, president of NIC. “We are looking forward to building on our track record of success in Rhode Island during the next five years.”
RI.gov was a finalist for the 2006 Best of the Web award given by the Center for Digital Government. The site receives an average of nearly 223,000 visits per month, and site traffic increased 35 percent in 2007 over the previous year. A recent site update added email alerts, PDA-ready agency contact information, RSS feeds, downloadable meeting and event information and other services.
