Check the Status of Your Tax Refund at http://www.Vermont.gov

MONTPELIER, Vt. – March 14, 2008 – Vermonters have a new way of checking the status of their tax refunds through an online service now available at the state’s official Web site (http://www.Vermont.gov). The eGovernment service offered by the Vermont Department of Taxes now allows Vermonters to check their tax refund status at any time of day or night.

The service gives citizens the ability to track the status of multiple tax types, including: 2007 income tax returns and refund, if any; 2007 Renter Rebate claims; 2008 HS-122 Homestead Declarations; 2008 Property Tax Adjustment Claims; and payments on record toward 2007 Vermont income taxes.

“We are very pleased to add an online service for the taxpayers of Vermont,” said Tom Pelham, Commissioner of the Vermont Department of Taxes. “Last year, the Taxpayer Information Line received over 100,000 phone inquiries. With both telephone and online options, we have further enhanced our customer service capabilities.”

Both the telephone and online services are free and available 24 hours a day. To access the service, citizens only need to provide the tax filing or return type, Social Security number, and ZIP code. Citizens can reach the online service at http://www.Vermont.gov or the Taxpayer Information Line toll-free within Vermont at 866-828-2865 or from out-of-state at 802-828-2865.

State individual income tax filings are due by midnight on April 15. Taxpayers filing their Vermont income tax return electronically usually receive their refund within five business days. Refunds on a Vermont income tax return filed on paper and mailed to the Department may take up to 20 business days.
